What Is the “Symbol vs Futures” Chart in Options Analytics?
The Symbol vs Futures chart helps you compare the spot price (symbol) of an index or stock with its corresponding futures price over time.
This view is useful for understanding premium/discount, trend strength, and futures positioning during intraday trading.
What does the Symbol vs Futures chart show?
This chart plots three data points on the same timeline:
- Symbol price (Spot price)
The real-time price of the underlying index or stock (for example, NIFTY spot). - Futures price
The traded price of the selected futures contract for the same underlying and expiry. - VWAP (Volume Weighted Average Price)
The average traded futures price weighted by volume, used as an intraday benchmark.
The chart helps you visually track how futures are behaving relative to the spot price.
Steps to access the Symbol vs Futures chart
On FYERS Web
- Go to Options
- Select the required index or stock
- Open the Analytics tab
- Scroll to the Futures section
- Click on Symbol vs Futures
How to read the chart?
- 1. Futures trading above spot
Indicates a premium in futures. Often seen in bullish or carry-forward setups. - 2. Futures trading below spot
Indicates a discount in futures. Can suggest weak sentiment or short buildup. - 3. Futures crossing VWAP
Above VWAP → futures buyers gaining strength
Below VWAP → futures sellers in control - 4. Divergence between spot and futures
Spot stable but futures falling → possible distribution
Futures stable but spot falling → watch for mean reversion
Example scenario
Scenario: NIFTY spot is gradually declining, the futures price falls faster and stays below VWAP.
Interpretation: This indicates aggressive short positioning in futures. Traders may combine this with OI or options data for confirmation.
What if I see sudden gaps or sharp moves?
Sudden moves may occur due to:
- News events
- Large institutional trades
- Futures rollovers near expiry
Use this chart alongside Futures OI for better context.
Important things to note
- This chart is for analysis only
- You cannot place trades directly from this view
- Data is intraday and refreshes based on the selected resolution
- Always match the futures expiry with your analysis timeframe
