What are Pre-Market and Post-Market sessions?

What are Pre-Market and Post-Market sessions?

You can place certain types of orders outside regular trading hours using the Pre-Market and Post-Market sessions. These short trading windows, available on both NSE and BSE, let you queue or execute delivery-based or margin-based equity orders before or after the main market.

Pre-Market session

Time: 9:00 AM – 9:08 AM (trading days, NSE & BSE)
During this period, you can place orders in the Equity segment before the market opens. These orders may get executed during pre-open matching or carry forward automatically to regular hours (from 9:15 AM onward).

Allowed:

  • Delivery and Intraday orders in the Equity segment
  • Market, Limit, and Trigger orders (no BO/CO)

Not allowed:

  • Bracket Orders (BO), Cover Orders (CO), or Scheduled Orders
  • F&O, Currency, and Commodity orders

How to place a Pre-Market order (Web & App)

  • Log in to the Web or App.
  • Search and select your equity scrip.
  • Choose Delivery or Intraday as order type.
  • Place the order between 9:00 AM and 9:08 AM.

If your order isn’t matched during the pre-open, it remains in the Open Orders tab and may execute once regular trading begins.

Post-Market session

Time: 3:40 PM – 4:00 PM (trading days, NSE & BSE)
This session allows you to place delivery-based or MTF (Margin Trading Facility) orders after the regular market closes at 3:30 PM. Orders are processed at the day’s closing price, subject to liquidity.

Allowed:

  • Delivery (CNC) & MTF (Margin Trading Facility) orders in Equity
  • Market orders only

Not allowed:

  • Intraday, BO, CO, or Scheduled Orders
  • F&O, Currency, and Commodity orders
  • Limit and Trigger orders

How to place a Post-Market order (Web & App)

  • Open the desired scrip.
  • Select Delivery or MTF as order type.
  • Place the order between 3:40 PM and 4:00 PM.

Orders unmatched by 4:00 PM are automatically cancelled.

Tip: Orders placed in Pre- or Post-Market sessions depend on market depth and available liquidity. Execution is not guaranteed even if the order is accepted.
