Why is my order rejected stating, "Provide a valid trigger price for placing an order. Your trigger price should be less than the LTP."?
This error appears when the trigger price you’ve entered for your Stop or Stop-Loss order is not valid based on the current market price (LTP – Last Traded Price). The trigger price determines when your pending order becomes active and is sent to the exchange.
Understanding the trigger price and LTP
- Trigger Price: The price at which your pending stop or stop-loss order becomes active.
- LTP (Last Traded Price): The most recent transaction price of the stock or contract.
For the order to be valid, the trigger price must comply with certain rules based on your trading intention (buy or sell) and the direction of your order.
When placing stop or SL orders, ensure:
For Buying Above the Market (Stop Buy Order)
- Your trigger price should be set above the LTP.
- If the LTP is ₹100, set the trigger price at something like ₹102.
For Selling Below the Market (Stop Loss Sell)
- Your trigger price should be set below the LTP.
- If the LTP is ₹100, set the trigger price at something like ₹98.
If you reverse these conditions (e.g., trigger above LTP when trying to sell), the order will be rejected.
Example:
- LTP of a stock = ₹100
- You want to place a stop-buy order at ₹105 → Set trigger price = ₹102
- You want to place a stop-loss sell order at ₹95 → Set trigger price = ₹98
What If...
Scenario | Explanation |
---|
I set a trigger price equal to or higher than the LTP while selling | The order is rejected because the trigger must be below the LTP. |
I’m not sure where to place the trigger | Use the chart to determine a technical level slightly above or below LTP depending on your strategy. |
I want to set a stop-limit order | Ensure both trigger and limit prices follow the same directional logic—trigger first, then limit. |
Always double-check whether your trigger price is directionally aligned with your order type (buy or sell). This avoids rejections and helps your orders execute as intended.
