What is the Impact of Merger and Demerger, and How To Track It in FYERS?

When a company undergoes a merger or demerger, your holdings in the Demat account are adjusted automatically. A merger replaces old shares with the merged entity’s shares as per the announced swap ratio; a demerger may credit shares of the resulting company. Your overall exposure remains aligned with the corporate action; what changes are the share quantities and the buy average shown in your portfolio.

Impact of a merger

  • Share swap: Old-company shares are removed and replaced with the merged company’s shares as per the swap ratio (e.g., 2:1).
  • Quantity change: Old quantity goes to zero; new quantity is credited.
  • Buy average: Adjusts automatically to reflect the swap.

Impact of a demerger

  • Original shares remain: You continue to hold shares of the parent company.
  • Resulting-company shares: Additional shares of the new company are credited.
  • Temporary ISIN first: Resulting-company shares are first credited under a temporary ISIN within a few days, typically within 45 working days from the record date.
  • Prices/averages after listing: The correct buy average and price for the new company update only after listing on the secondary market. Once listed, the shares reflect under the permanent ISIN with accurate prices/averages.
  • Email notification: You will see the shares credited in Demat and receive an email notification before the 45-working-day window is over; please wait until 45 working days elapse or until listing, whichever is earlier.
